Through The Eyes Of Glass

“Photography of faces through glass objects. Each Image captures the tension between closeness and distortion, inviting you to see people through a different perspective.”

For this project we were guided to create a photo book of our choosing that was to have 15-20 images displaying a message, story, or journey.

Concept

The idea for my photo book was to use textured glass objects to distort facial features and expressions. I wanted to capture each detail the glass made to really highlight the manipulation the glass makes with the face.

Images

Olivia Keller (me): Used two sets of clear textured glasses with water in (some) of them.

Peyton Litchenberg: Used colored glass and used the shape of the glasses to my advantage.

Thomas Hebeka: Used a wide clear glass (some with water) to elongate features.

Olivia Witker: Used a colored textured glass to change the appearance of features.

I began by photographing 4 people (including myself) in the studio. I placed the glassware on frosted plexiglass to create depth and gloss. I had the models dress in neutrals and the background was fully white to make the glass and each distortion pop and accentuated. For some of the images I would add water to the glass to explore new ways and techniques of the distortion.

Cover

The overhead shot allows for full view of each shadow.

The placement of glassware varies to show contrasting heights, textures, and overlap in the shadows.

For the cover, it contains all of the glasses that were used for each person. I wanted to show each shadow to highlight textures and colors in the glass.

Final Design

“Through The Eyes Of Glass” encourages readers to look at people through a different lens. Often times the perception of ourselves is skewed and altered by outside influence and insecurities. This photo book allows viewers to see the beauty, intricacy, and different perspective of each person.

With minimal typography, I wanted to highlight and emphasize each photograph to allow the viewer to inspect each distortion.
